Abstract:

As we can see in our research experience and review of a large amount of ethnographic materials, the Andalusian ethnolinguistic identity is one of the most stigmatised in the Hispanic cultural context, since it is even taken as an example of this type of processes at an international level beyond this one. For some specialists, this stigmatisation of both speakers and scribes of the Andalusian language is situated within the framework of power relations characteristic of colonisation and the dynamics of acculturation and underestimation of the cultural and linguistic traits of the subalternised Andalusian people, especially Andalusian language speakers. Likewise, we find a kind of linguistic resilience among the effects of these dynamics, which has been developing, especially in recent decades, a socio-cultural movement known as Andalophile, an agent of a whole diversity of ethno-literary production, oral, musical and visual literature which, sometimes unintentionally, poses a challenge to the ethnocentric perspective of the ideology of linguistic Spanishism, building a linguistic identity without complexes among broad sectors of Andalusian society.

Abstract:

This paper analyses the details of the process by which the Andalusian ethnolinguistic identity is one of the most stigmatised in the Hispanic cultural context, which is even taken as an example of this type of processes at a global level. Among the reasons for the stigmatisation of speakers and scribes of the Andalusian language are the framework of power relations characteristic of colonisation and the dynamics of acculturation and underestimation of the cultural —and therefore linguistic— traits of the subalternised Andalusian people (whose territory is located in the western Mediterranean, in the Spanish state). Among the effects of these dynamics is also a kind of linguistic resilience that has been developing, especially in recent decades, a socio-cultural movement known as Andalophile, an agent of a whole diversity of ethno-literary production, oral, musical and visual literature which, sometimes unintentionally, poses a challenge to the ethnocentric perspective of linguistic Spanishism, building a linguistic identity without complexes among broad sectors of Andalusian society.

Abstract:

These pages attempt to contribute ethnographic material to the discussions and contextual circumstances of a peculiar sociocultural conflict over the relationship between humans and animals in the village of Mijas-Miha (Andalusia, Western Mediterranean), where the existence over six decades of a local service of Donkey-Taxi for tourists has recenly unleashed an abolitionist campaign by animal rights activists. Through the use of ethnographic methodology, this fundamentally descriptive and case-based article is originated around the contradictions of the urban-animalist ideology regarding the ways of life and the Andalusian peasantry culture. Processes which sometimes places us in the urban vs. rural traditional dialectic, or as a result of a globalizing Western ethnocentrism in relation to how to apprehend the nature and the human.
